The Lagos State Government has announced it will begin strict enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics starting July 1, following an 18-month transition period that included extensive stakeholder engagements. Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab confirmed the implementation timeline on Monday, emphasizing that the policy aligns with global environmental standards and follows the state’s successful prohibition of Styrofoam products earlier this year.
The ban, which targets plastic bags, bottles, and food containers designed for one-time use, comes as Lagos intensifies efforts to reduce pollution and flooding caused by plastic waste. Wahab noted that the government had conducted multiple dialogues with manufacturers, retailers, and environmental groups since January 2023 to prepare businesses for the transition.
